Eye of Winter is a cold spell skill.

Skill functions and interactions

Projectile speed affects distance traveled by both the eye and shards.

Because each hit is small, Eye of Winter tends to inflict no or very weak chill, but can still build up freeze.

If the eye projectile enters the area of an elemental ground effect or Orb skill, any further shards launched from that eye gain extra damage as follows:

In all cases,

  • An Eye of Winter retains any damage boost it gets for as long as it lasts. Leaving the area of an elemental ground effect or Orb does not end the damage boost.
  • A shard projectile has the boost only if the eye that launched it had the boost when it launched. It does not matter if the shard itself enters an area, or if the eye enters the area after launching the shard.
  • The extra damage is 75% of Eye of Winter's damage. The level, damage, and/or magnitude of the ground effect or Orb skill does not matter.
  • The source of the ground effect does not matter, whether created by minions, enemies, or map modifiers: all boost Eye of Winter's damage.
  • The player appears to be the only source of proper Orb effects in the game. Monster abilities that seem Orb-like, such as those created by a Priest of the Sun or by Ketzuli, High Priest of the Sun, do not have the Orb tag and do not boost Eye of Winter's damage.
  • A given Eye of Winter can get multiple boosts of different elements
    • For example if it passes over both ignited ground and an Orb of Storms, it will have 100% base cold damage (the default) + 75% fire damage + 75% lightning damage.
  • A given Eye of Winter cannot get multiple boosts from ground effects or Orbs of the same element
    • For example if it passes over both ignited ground and a Solar Orb, it will still have only +75% fire damage, not +150%.

As with chill, the small individual hits from Eye of Winter's projectiles tend to result in little or no chance to ignite or shock. A lightning-boosted Eye of Winter can build up electrocution just as it can build up freeze, if an effect enables electrocution for it.

If supported by Ricochet, both the eye and the shard projectiles can chain off of walls. This can greatly amplify Eye of Winter's damage in tight spaces.

The Embitter support can make all elemental ground effects and Orbs grant cold damage. A single Eye of Winter can still get up to three damage boosts, one from a ground effect or Orb of each element. The visual effect associated with each element will also appear, as normal, even though the damage is all cold.

Despite its Lightning, Cold, Fire, and Orb tags, the Elemental Storm skill granted by the Stormweaver ascendancy does not grant Eye of Winter any extra damage. This may be a bug.

The in-game Skills menu calculates Eye of Winter's DPS as the damage of a single shard × the spell's casts per second. The actual damage will, in almost all cases, be several times greater because several shards will hit a target in a typical casting. The Skills screen will also never show the effects of elemental ground effects and Orbs on the skill's damage, even if the player is standing in one or more.

Version history

Version Changes
0.3.0
  • The base damage scaling of all player spell and secondary damage skills has been tweaked to scale better in the late game. Generally speaking, spells that do not have damage number changes called out below will have near-identical base damage at low levels, roughly 5% more damage at gem level 20, and roughly 20% more damage at gem level 30.
  • Eye of Winter: When passing through an allied Flame Wall, the Eye itself and now all the shards it subsequently released will receive the Flame Wall's added Fire Damage. Shard Projectiles now travel 25% further. Eye Projectiles no longer releases a burst of shards at the end of its flight. The frequency the Eye Projectiles fires projectiles has been increased by roughly 35%. Each use of the Skill now deals 900% more Damage with its first Hit against each enemy. Now has a cast time of 1.4 seconds (previously 1.1), a Mana cost of 94-195 at Gem levels 13-20 (previously 54-128), and a 15 second Cooldown. Now Gains 100% of damage as damage of the corresponding Type when passing over an Elemental Ground Effect or Orb (previously 75%), and now deals 16-40 to 24-59 Cold Damage at Gem levels 13-20 (previously 7-17 to 10-25).

0.2.0
  • Many Skills have had their base damage and/or damage growth per level rebalanced. Most of these changes are not specifically mentioned below as the changes are too widespread.
  • Eye of Winter now gains 75% of damage as damage of the corresponding Type when passing over an Elemental Ground Effect (previously 50%). The Skill also no longer incorrectly states the Projectile applies the passed over-ground effect to nearby Enemies.
  • Fixed a bug where Eye of Winter passing over multiple ailment ground effects only got the extra damage bonus from the most recent one, rather than all of them.
0.1.0
  • Introduced to the game.
