Abyss is a type of encounter introduced in Rise of the Abyssal league. They are first introduced in Clearfell by an NPC, Mortimer.
Mechanics
Fissures can be found randomly in areas near packs of monsters. Defeating monsters nearby will cause the fissures to close, causing Abyssal monsters to spawn. Closing several clustered fissures will cause a pit to open, releasing larger and more dangerous monsters. Monsters spawned by the pit absorb the monster rarity and monster modifiers based on monsters killed near the abyss. Defeating all of the spawned monsters will seal the pit, spawning an Abyssal Trove chest that contains various items, including ancient bones. Occasionally, instead of an Abyssal Trove, it may instead spawn the entrance into the Abyssal Depths.
Multiple pits can spawn in an area and can be connected to each other. The size of the fissures, number of fissures, and number of pits increase based on progression through the acts and endgame.
Absorbed monster modifiers can sometimes be converted into Abyssal modifiers, upgrading or modifying these effects.
- Rogue exiles killed near abysses will be respawn from the pit as Lichborn exiles. Unique items originally equipped by the exile are retained, and Lichborn exiles can also have Abyssal modifiers. Lichborn exiles can drop an exclusive unique jewel.
- Killing a map boss near an abyss will spawn a gigantic larvae monster.
- Monsters imprisoned in essences near pits contain an additional exclusive "Essence of the Abyss" variant.
If a map has the modifier Abysses have (7-9) additional Pits
Area is overrun by the Abyssal desecrated modifier, it will cause all natural inhabitants of the map to spawn near Abysses.
If a map has the modifier Abysses lead to an Abyssal Boss desecrated modifier, it will cause the final Abyssal Pit to lead to a boss encounter, either in the map or within the Abyssal Depths.
Abyssal Depths
If a pit results generates an entrance to the Abysal Depths, the pit entrance will display "Dark Domain". Jumping into it will take the character to an underground Abyssal city, a linear area filled with Abyssal monsters. Rare monsters found in this area always have an Abyssal modifier, and the rare monster at the end of the area has a Lichborn modifier.
The end of the area also contains 3 Abyssal Troves and a Large Abyssal Trove. The Large Abyssal Trove can contain exclusive rewards:

Desecrated modifiers
Desecrated modifiers are special modifiers that can be added to items using preserved bone currency. While unrevealed, desecrated modifiers appear as a line of green abyssal symbols. Taking this item to the Well of Souls in Act 2 will allow this modifier to be revealed, granting a choice of one of three modifiers. Sometimes, an offered modifier may be one that cannot normally roll.
