Ghost Dance is a persistent buff skill. It periodically grants a stack of Ghost Shroud. Upon taking a hit, a stack of Ghost Shroud is consumed to recover energy shield based on your Evasion Rating.

Skill functions and interactions

The character must be hit to lose a Ghost Shroud and to recover energy shield. Defensive mechanics that prevent a hit from occurring such as evasion also prevents the loss of Ghost Shrouds.

Block also prevents loss of Ghost Shrouds. Taking damage from blocked hits (e.g. through Glancing Blows) does not change this.

Self-hits will cause a Ghost Shroud to be lost normally.

Unlike its Path of Exile counterpart, and contrary to the skill's description and stats (which are identical to POE1), the energy shield recovery does not occur after taking damage.[Likely due to a bug] Currently, the recovery applies inconsistently:

  • If at full energy shield, a Ghost Shroud will be consumed, but no recovery will occur and the character takes the expected damage from the hit.[1]
  • If not at full energy shield, a Ghost Shroud is consumed and the recovery occurs immediately before taking damage, but both are considered simultaneous for loss calculations. It is not considered a mitigation/damage reduction effect. This means that even if no energy shield loss is visible or energy shield is higher after the hit (e.g. the recovery exceeds damage taken), it can still result in being inflicted with ailments from the damage taken, but will not cause recharge to be interrupted due to energy shield loss never actually occurring (i.e. going from a higher ES value to a lower ES value).[2]

Version history

Version Changes
0.4.0
  • Ghost Dance: Now has Maximum 3 Ghost Shrouds at all gem levels (previously 3-5 at gem levels 1-20). Duration between gaining Ghost Shrouds is now 7.6-6.1 seconds (previously 3.85-3.05) at Gem levels 4-20. Quality now instead provides 0-20% increased Reservation Efficiency.
0.2.0
  • Fixed an issue where Ghost Dance Quality was incorrect.
  • Fixed a bug where Ghost Dance did not display the maximum number of Ghost Shrouds you could have on the gem.
0.1.1e
  • Fixed a bug with the Ghost Dance Skill not losing stacks on hit and not gaining stacks after weapon swapping in some cases.
    • This appears to have introduced a new undocumented change/bug that affected the functionality of Ghost Dance. See Mechanics.[Undocumented][3]
0.1.0
  • Introduced to the game.
