Using this essence adds the modifier Bears the Mark of the Abyssal Lord, which can either be a prefix ("Abyssal") or a suffix ("of the Abyss"). The weighting appears to be equal regardless of whether a prefix or suffix was removed, unless if a prefix or suffix is blocked from being added by this essence. This modifier is considered mutually exclusive with a desecrated modifier; it is not possible to add this affix to an item that already has a desecrated modifier.
When using a preserved bone to Desecrate the item, it will always attempt to remove this modifier first, replacing it with an unrevealed Desecrated modifier "of a higher tier". It appears to cull modifier options that have a level of less than 40% of the item's item level[1] (e.g. an item level 80 item will not reveal into mods less than level 32). This effect is subject to minimum modifier level mechanics.
Minimum Modifier Level: The modifier options when the desecrated modifier is revealed are at least this level or higher, except if a specific modifier type would be excluded entirely from being able to roll.
In other words, at least one tier of each mod will always be eligible to roll, respecting item level. For example, if all tiers of a type of a modifier would be excluded, and the highest modifier tier is below Level 32 (e.g. Light Radius), the highest tier of Light Radius (requiring Level 30) would still be able to roll.
It does not appear to bias modifier weights towards higher tier modifiers, nor does it appear to be influenced by the modifier that was replaced.
If the Mark of the Abyssal Lord modifier is fractured, another modifier will be replaced instead when using a preserved bone.[2]
