Chayula, also known as The Dreamer or The Benevolent Dreamer, is a Breachlord, a powerful otherworldly entity from the domain beyond reality. Though he was initially considered an antagonist alongside the other Breachlords during the events of Path of Exile, various lore introduced in Path of Exile 2 suggests that he may have aided humanity, though his motives remain unclear.

History

During the events of the Winter of the World, all life on the Vastiri - serpent, hyena, human, or golem - joined together to fight against the Abyssals. According to historical documents, the Third Pact was written into stone, and Chayula granted this alliance knowledge in exchange for a drop of blood from each race of Wraeclast. Chayula was also known to have communicated with the Maraketh on at least one occasion, capable of human speech and intelligence. According to Zarka, the servants of the Dreamer are forbidden from entering the Valley of the Titans.

Over the centuries, it was written in the Book of the Great Dreamer that "his Will began to subtly change".

During the era of the Vaal, a Vaal cult known as the Cult of the Purple Flame worshipped the otherworldly entities seen in their dreams and otherworldly artifacts, and had knowledge of the five Breachlords' plans to merge into a singular being known as Xesht-Ula. Though the Cult were intially often banished for their beliefs to Trarthus or Phaaryl, they continued to push for legitimacy and eventually were recognized and granted a chamber in the Temple of Atzoatl, led by Zilquapa, Architect of the Breach. At some point, the other Breachlords - Xoph, Tul, Esh, and Uul-Netol - attempted the union into Xesht-Ula without Chayula; the incomplete union resulted in the creation of the Breachlord Xesht. Chayula's current whereabouts are unknown, and Xesht desires to consume Chayula to become whole. It is suggested that Chayula realised that the fusion into Xesht-Ula would fail if the desires of the Breachlords were not aligned, and instead opted for a different method independently to achieve his goals.

In modern times, a sect of monk believe in an entity known as the Benevolent Dreamer, though it is generally not known outside of the Maraketh that this is in fact Chayula. The Monk character is one such person, sentenced to be hanged in Ogham due to his heretical beliefs on Ezomyte land. When ascending into the Acolyte of Chayula, the truth of the Dreamer's identity is revealed to him, but he continues to believe in Chayula's "good" intentions. Though the exact beliefs of the Dreamer are unknown, general beliefs promote the inherent value of living beings and oppose slavery and oppression.
