Crafting

Crafting is a core mechanic of Path of Exile 2 involving using currency or other techniques to modify the stats and properties of items. Almost all items interact with crafting mechanics in some way. Unless otherwise stated, corrupted or mirrored items cannot be crafted upon, though it is possible to place items in their rune sockets.

Overview

The main goal of crafting is the modification of an item through either enchantments or affixes, and is inherently based on chance. While certain Items can alter the odds of a specific outcome to occur, specific end results can generally not be guaranteed. One of two exceptions to this are upgrades from normal to magic to rare Rarity, which are guaranteed to upgrade the rarity of the item. Upgrading a normal Item to unique Rarity is however not guaranteed, as described in the table below. The other exception are enchantments, which are added to items via either Runes or Soul Cores. They cannot be retrieved once inserted, only destroyed by placing another Rune or Soul Core into the socket.

At base, altering affixes is completely based on chance. Omens can alter the amount of Prefixes or Suffixes that will be altered by the crafting attempt, however they cannot influence the effect of those affixes.

Upgrading rarity

"Upgrading" refers to changing an item's rarity.

Augmenting and removing modifiers

"Augment" refers to adding an explicit modifier to an item without changing its rarity. Magic items have a default modifier limit of 2 (1 prefix/1 suffix), while rare items have a default modifier limit of 6 (3 prefix/3 suffix). Rare jewels have a limit of 4 (2 prefix/2 suffix), and flasks, charms, and relics have a limit of 2.

Randomising numerical values

Certain currencies can adjust the numerical values of stats found on items within a designated range without reforging or changing their current modifiers.

Modifying quality

Quality affects certain inherent stats of an item. The amount of quality gained on using quality currency depends on the item level of the item or if the item is unique.

Modifying sockets

Skill gems can have up to 5 sockets for support gems or other skill gems in the case of meta gems.

Weapon and armour items have sockets which can be modified to socket runes or soul cores. Certain jewellery base types may also have a socket.

Enchantments

Certain currencies can add an enchantment to an item which are separate from implicit or explicit modifiers.

Distilled Emotion	Only usable on amulets or waystones	Amulet: instilling a combination of three distilled emotions adds or replaces an enchantment that grants a notable passive skill Waystones: instilling a combination of one to three emotions adds or replaces an enchantment that adds layers of Delirium and reward modifiers on a waystone affecting the map you open.

Crafting benches are interactable objects that provide a variety of different crafting options, and may offer exclusive effects or a greater degree of control with crafting.
