Waystones can be modified to increase the difficulty and reward of the monster encountered in maps. one Tier higher.

Powerful Map Bosses frequently drop Waystones one Tier higher.

Map bosses are unique monster that are present in all non-unique maps and some unique maps. Defeating a map boss completes the map.

Each map area has a specific boss that will appear if the map contains a boss. The combinations can be found in List of maps.

Mechanics

Map bosses have significantly increased monster item rarity and quantity. Most bosses are versions of bosses from the campaign, though they may have modified or new skills or different arenas/arena hazards. Map bosses are guaranteed to drop a rare item. In addition, as unique monsters, all items they drop will have an item level 2 levels higher than their monster level.

Occasionally, a map will have an icon on the Atlas that indicates it contains a Powerful Map Boss, strengthening the map's boss while also improving their drops. Waystones dropped by powerful map bosses are always one tier higher than the map you are in. Powerful map bosses also have a base chance to drop a waystone that scales down in higher tier maps; this chance is affected by modifiers to waystone drop chance.

In parties, when fighting a map boss or pinnacle boss, only the map owner can respawn the full party simultaneously, if they have respawn attempts remaining. Doing so will restart the boss encounter from full life.

Deadly Map Bosses are specific Powerful Map BossesPowerful Map Bosses are Map Bosses that are even more difficult and drop even better rewards.

Powerful Map Bosses frequently drop Waystones one Tier higher. that appear in specific Maps and are more difficult and drop better rewards.

These rewards are often accompanied by a specific item, usually from a pool of items. For example Unique Items, or Lineage Supports.Lineage Supports are powerful and transformative Support Gems which can drop in maps, or come from specific sources like a particular Boss.

You may only Socket one copy of any given Lineage Support across all of your Skills at once.

Deadly Map Bosses can also drop items that grant access to Pinnacle Bosses.

Citadel boss

Citadel bosses, sometimes referred to as uber act bosses, are special map bosses based on the the final bosses of Act 1 to Act 3:

• Count Geonor
• Jamanra, the Abomination
• Doryani, Royal Thaumaturge

Citadel bosses drop Crisis Fragments, or Calamity Fragments with all ten map boss atlas passive points allocated. These items are used to access The Arbiter of Ash - the pinnacle Atlas boss - and its uber variant respectively.

Anomaly boss

Anomaly bosses are special map bosses based on the final bosses of Act 4 and the Interludes that can be encountered in maps with mysterious anomalies. They require a minimum Tier 6 waystone to access.

• Manoki, the Chosen - The Jade Isles - "Eye of the Storm" Anomaly: activate a "Karui Beacon" in a nearby map to reveal the connection to the map.
• Varloch, the Ashen Lord and Avelyne, the Withered Rose - Derelict Mansion - "Mansion in the Mists" Anomaly: activate multiple "Draiocht Hengestones" in nearby maps to clear the dark mist. The hengestone is marked by wisps spinning around a map on the Atlas that will move to a new map on completion.
• Zahmir, the Blade Sovereign - Sacred Reservoir - "Temporal Sandstorm" Anomaly: activate three "Temporal Tether" devices in maps around the sandstorm to clear it.
• Ytzara, Blood Oracle and Maztli, Flesh-Shaper - Sealed Vault - "Estazunti's Vault" Anomaly: Find and activate a "Vessel of Estazunti" in one of the connected maps to access the sealed vault.

Anomaly bosses have an exclusive drop pool of lineage supports; they will always drop at least one lineage support.

0.4.0	Idols of Estazunti are no longer required to unlock Vaal Vault maps. Existing items will be deleted.
0.3.1	All Maps now contain Map Bosses (except for some Unique Maps and Hideouts). To complete a Map you are only required to kill the Boss, you no longer have to kill any Rares and you can do as much or as little of the rest of the Map as you please. The existing icons that currently indicate there is a Map Boss now instead signify the area contains a Powerful Map Boss that is extra challenging and rewarding.
0.3.0	Mysterious anomalies can now appear on the Atlas.
0.2.0	Once you start a Boss fight, the respawning system will change to require the map owner to collectively respawn the entire party. This is so that you must still kill the boss from full life. If you decide to rush to the Map Boss without interacting with any of the other Map content and then die, you will respawn at the Boss checkpoint and only the Map Boss will be present. All of the other monsters and content will be removed. This is to prevent cases where players would be able to farm multiple copies of the same rewards by dying on purpose. Tower Maps can now spawn with all extra content mechanics, including Bosses. Waystones dropped by Final Map Bosses will now always be one tier higher than the map you are in. Final Map Bosses and the final naturally-occurring Rare Monsters in Tier 1 maps have a 100% chance to drop a waystone. This chance scales down as you get into higher Map Tiers, but will still be guaranteed with appropriate investment into Waystone Suffix Modifiers and through the Atlas Passive Tree. Natual waystone drops have been reduced to compensate.
0.1.1	Added the new Overseer's Precursor Tablet, a currency item which can be placed in completed Towers to add Map Bosses to valid Maps in radius. These tablets drop from Map Bosses, and can roll exclusive modifiers that affect Map Bosses. Adjusted the chance for Maps to contain Bosses, you should be encountering a Boss roughly every 1 in 4 Maps. The chance for Map Bosses to drop a Waystone of the current tier or higher has been reduced to account for the increase in total number of Map Bosses.
