This quest spawns through the whole Act 3.

At first, The Hooded One asked the player to lower the water level of Utzaal. So that the player travelled to Infested Barrens via Jungle Ruins. Over there, Alva told the player to find a large Soul Core in Jiquani's Sanctum (via Chimeral Wetlands and Jiquani's Machinarium), in order to activate the access to The Matlan Waterways.

The way to the Jiquani's Machinarium is guarded by a unique monster Xyclucian, the Chimera, which also drops Chimeral Inscribed UltimatumChimeral Inscribed UltimatumArea Level: 40

  • Speak to the Hooded One about what do to next

The Hooded One:

Utzaal is close. Be careful. The Vaal heavily relied on the use of Corruption. Their lands may still be dangerous.

Find the Ziggurat

Only one seat of Vaal civilisation remains unlooted: the Sunken City of Utzaal. Explore the Sandswept Marsh in search of its most prominent Ziggurat.

  • Cross the Sandswept Marsh in search of a Ziggurat

Explore Ziggurat Encampment

You have found a group of treasure hunters already camped on a ziggurat in the middle of a lake. Explore their camp to find out more.

  • Meet the treasure hunters

Oswald:

What kind of stunt was that, traversing the Marsh? Have to be smarter if you're to survive. As Quartermaster, I'll do my best to keep you alive. I can buy what equipment you find, or sell you what others have unearthed before we ship it back to Kingsmarch. If you disappear in the jungle, I'll also be the one to note your death in our logs. You're welcome.

Alva:

Hello there, I'm Alva Valai. Sorry about Oswald... He can be a bit... rough with newcomers. But he's really not a bad sort. In any case, we can always use another pair of hands around here. Welcome!

Talk to the Hooded One

The Sunken City of Utzaal appears to live up to its name. Ask the Hooded One about potentially lowering the water to reveal the city.

  • Ask the Hooded One about lowering the water level

The Hooded One:

Somewhere in this region, there were sophisticated canals and waterways. We might be able to use them to drain this lake. We must hope that the mechanisms are still functioning, despite their age. It is the only way to reverse the drowning of this once thriving city... the first step in our search for the secret knowledge of the Vaal.

Search for The Matlan Waterways

Somewhere in the region are canals that could potentially be used to lower the water and reveal the city. Find The Matlan Waterways.

Ask Alva for advice

You have discovered a stone altar that seems to be a control mechanism for a canal. Summon Alva to ask her for advice on this ancient mechanism.

  • Summon Alva to ask her for advice

Alva:

The Vaal used this device to operate the mechanisms in the canal, but we would need a special artifact to power it. From the translations I've made, I believe they were called 'Soul Cores'. I've never even seen an intact Soul Core large enough for something like this though... I suppose if you want to try and find one you could ask our guide, Servi.

Talk to Servi

The stone altar in Infested Barrens requires a large Soul Core for power. Ask Servi if she or her tribe know where one might be found.

  • Ask Servi for more information about Soul Cores

Servi:

Ah, so you after blood crystals - the thing Alva call Soul Cores. I knew you were going to be trouble! Out there in the dark, there's an ancient ruin - very old indeed. My tribe has spoke of it for generations. We seen strange creatures there - made of stone, unnatural, with unblinkin' eyes. That place? It is forsaken. I would warn you not to go there. But if it's Soul Cores you seek, then take the risk you must.

  • Ask Alva for advice

Alva:

Now this is a find! A Vaal ruin that hasn't been looted. No one from camp has managed to make it to this part of the jungle and survive... Until now!
This mechanism... if powered with a small Soul Core, it could open that door. There should definitely be Soul Cores somewhere around here. They had to power these constructs somehow!

Search for a small Soul Core

Speak to Alva

You've found a mysterious symbol on the floor. Summon Alva to learn more about what is going on here.

  • Summon Alva and speak to her

Alva:

This is the largest Soul Core I've ever seen! With this we could power the mechanism in the waterways. But it isn't charged...
There is still latent energy residing here... From what I can gather, these lines in the stonework should lead to generators. You might need to find some more Soul Cores to spin them up, but everything looks to be in surprisingly decent condition. Maybe the constructs have been maintaining all this... In any case, let's hope it still functions. We'll then have to remove that large Soul Core from the wall of course, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Activate two Generators

To retrieve the large Soul Core you need, Alva has advised you that you must find two medium Soul Cores and use them to activate two Generators in Jiquani's Sanctum.

  • Search Jiquani's Sanctum for two medium Soul Cores and use them to activate two Generators

Talk to Alva

You have lowered the water and revealed the Sunken City of Utzaal. Return to town and go down the southwestern stairs to enter it.

  • Return to the Encampment and find Alva at the base of the Ziggurat

Alva:

Beyond this sealed door is the Temple of the Sun God, Kopec. I've seen writings by a fellow named Ketzuli that mention his research in this temple, but I can't quite make sense of what the device was or how it functioned. Unfortunately we can't use Kalguuran explosives without risking whatever's inside. However... there's a piece missing from the door. Knowing the Vaal, it'll be made of gold, of course! I recommend heading into the city to search for it. Try looking around the Aggorat area, as that was well known for its opulence and golden tributes, especially at the main temple's apex. Hurry back if you find it!

Doryani:

Gah! No! Do not fail me... Not now! Ugh... how could this happen...? All I have done. All that I sacrificed...

Alva:

Your people cannot be saved. History is already written. You can stay here and die... or come with us and help save the future.

Doryani:

Hmm... the legacy of the Vaal must be protected... I do know of a way to contain the Beast.

Alva:

Best you start talking then. My friend here isn't exactly the peacemaking type...

Doryani:

If only I had more time... There is an ancient weapon. A weapon that was used against Corruption, from a civilization lost to the ages. I have one piece of it. Three others were scattered... I have been searching for them, but the Karui have interfered at every turn.

Alva:

So you will help us?

Doryani:

I suppose I must... It is too late for us here. This era is over. I pleaded with Atziri for her patience... but she would not abide me. She will attempt her communion with the Beast, and utter devastation will ravage our people. But... the fact that you are here... a living descendant of our people... it gives me some hope for our future. I will come to your era. Perhaps there is still time.

Alva:

It's settled then. Let's hurry back to the time portal.

Doryani:

Utzaal... my people... they're all long dead. It is one thing to hear it, but... another to see it. This city is nothing but a grave. I can't change their fate, but the Vaal are not entirely gone. Alva—and her Vaal ancestry—is proof of that. I will do what I must to protect what remains, and perhaps one day we can rebuild. For that to happen, we need the Weapon. We must travel to the archipelago the Karui call Ngamakanui. If the pieces still exist, that is where they will be found.

Alva:

Oh good, you're alive! Well... that was quite the adventure, wasn't it?

The Hooded One:

Have you learned the location of the Weapon?

  • Ranger: He has told me the Weapon is in pieces. One is around his neck. The others are scattered in a Karui archipelago.
  • Huntress: Aye. He mentioned the Weapon's in pieces. One piece is on him. The others, scattered around a Karui archipelago.
  • Monk: He has revealed the truth. The Weapon is in pieces. He retains one of them. The others are somewhere to be found in a Karui archipelago.
  • Witch: I have. But it has been split into pieces. The Royal Thaumaturge has one and claims the others are scattered around a Karui archipelago.
  • Sorceress: Doryani has informed me the Weapon is in pieces. He safeguards one piece, but the others are scattered around a Karui archipelago.
  • Warrior: Doryani claims it is in pieces. He holds one. But there are three others he says are scattered in a Karui archipelago.
  • Mercenary: Yep. The weapon ain't whole no more. Doryani's got a piece of it. The rest are scattered around some Karui archipelago.

The Hooded One:

Ngamakanui. Interesting... We must make haste.

Alva:

Well then... how about I take you and your merry friends to Kingsmarch? The port town is within the area of Ngamakanui. From there you can charter a ship from my contact and begin your search. We've quite a haul of treasure we've borrowed from Utzaal... It will more than cover the charter cost.

The Hooded One:

Hmm. Kingsmarch would indeed be a wise location from which to base ourselves.

Alva:

Great! We can leave whenever you're ready, just let me know.

The Hooded One:

Returning with Doryani was an inspired move. As the foremost expert on the Beast that ever lived, he is exactly the man we need. I doubt we can trust him in a broader sense, but, for the moment, our goals are aligned. He wishes to contain the Beast, and so do we. If he thinks we should travel south to Ngamakanui, then so we shall. This weapon of the Precursors... it may just be our best hope...

Travel to Kingsmarch

You have captured the foremost Vaal expert on the Beast, and brought him to the present to aid you now. Speak to Alva to travel with her and Doryani to Kingsmarch.

  • Speak to Alva to travel to Kingsmarch

Alva:

It's a long overland journey to Kingsmarch, but there shouldn't be too much danger once we leave the jungle. The Kalguurans keep the road reasonably secure. Shall we?
