Difficulty causes monsters to have increased damage and toughness, as well as making them grant more experience and drop better items.

A pinnacle encounter represents the most difficult and rewarding content relating to a given map mechanic. They general feature a difficult boss. All pinnacle encounters can drop exclusive unique items. Completing a pinnacle encounter at certain difficulty thresholds, including for the first time, will grant two atlas passive skill points for their respective atlas passive trees.

Players do not gain experience during pinnacle encounters, but experience loss on death also does not occur.

0.3.0	Currently, access to most Pinnacle Content requires the same key at the easiest, and most difficult version of the content. This creates a negative feeling where at lower difficulties, instead of wanting to run the content, you're often better off just selling it to someone who can run it at maximum difficulty. To address this, each content (excluding The Arbiter of Ash) will now drop Splinters, which will not form into singular Items. Instead of using the singular, combined item in the Realmgate, you can now just bring your Splinters. Upon inserting the splinters into the Realmgate, an interface will appear allowing you to pick your difficulty, each with a different entry cost. As a result of this change, the corresponding Atlas Passive Trees no longer affects the difficulty of the content, and has been changed to purely affect the content in the Maps on the Atlas.
0.2.0f	Pinnacle Bosses now have unlimited respawn attempts at Difficulty 0.
0.2.0	Pinnacle boss content now takes roughly half the amount of time to unlock compared to before. In addition, Pinnaccle bosses have been made much easier at Difficulty 0 as well. It's our intention to allow you to face Difficulty 0 of this content much earlier in your endgame progression while still preserving the difficulty of Difficulty 4. Players no longer lose experience from from dying in Simulacrum, The Twisted Domain, Olroth's arena inside Logbooks, the Crux of Nothingness, or The Burning Monolith. Players also no longer gain experience from killing monsters in these areas.
