Augment sockets (also known as rune sockets or item sockets) are slots found on weapons and armour into which augments can be placed to provide additional bonuses for equipping the item.
Mechanics
Augments can be placed in augment sockets to add an enchantment to the item. Augments typically grant offensive modifiers to martial weapons, caster-related modifiers to wands and staves, minion-related modifiers to sceptres, and defensive modifiers to armour. Once socketed, augments cannot normally be removed, but can be replaced by another augment. Doing so will destroy the previous augment.
It is possible to remove an augment without destroying it using an File:Orb of Extraction inventory icon.pngOrb of ExtractionOrb of ExtractionStack Size: 10Destroys an Equipment item, returning any Augments socketed in itRight click this item then left click on an item containing socketed Augments to apply it.; however, doing so will destroy the item it was socketed into.
Augments
There are several types of augments, which can be placed into augment sockets in any combination.
- Runes - can drop anywhere.
- Exclusive runes can only be found in The Phaaryl Megalith unique map.
- Soul cores - obtained as rewards in the Trials of Chaos.
- Ancient soul cores can only be found in the Temple of Atziri.
- Idols - can drop from Azmerian wisp-possessed monsters.
- Abyssal eyes - obtained as rewards in the Abyssal Depths. Limited to 1 Abyssal eye.
Adding sockets

By default, body armours and two-handed weapons can have up to two sockets, while other types of armour and weapons can have up to one. Quivers and jewellery cannot have any sockets. An item can never have more sockets than the number of grid spaces the item takes up.
Exceptional items
In high level areas, normal and unique (including boss drops) rarity items have a very low chance of generating with an additional socket; these items will state "Exceptional" next to the base type until it is upgraded/identified. Note that this temporary affix is shared with items that drop with 21-30% quality above the default maximum of 20.
Some unique items may also have additional sockets beyond the normal limit, such as

The additional sockets from exceptional items, hidden item modifiers, and corruption can stack, though the number of sockets cannot exceed the number of item slots the item takes up in the inventory.
