The Map Device is a world object that allows the player to access certain areas by interacting with it to open the Atlas.

Accessing the Map Device

After completing the Legacy of the Vaal quest in Act 3 (Cruel) and reaching the Epilogue, players gain access to a map device located in The Ziggurat Refuge. Players will also receive a personal Ziggurat Map Device hideout decoration which can be placed in their hideout and used instead.

Mechanics

Main page: Atlas

Using the map device opens the Atlas user interface. Selecting an uncompleted node on the map, placing a waystone into the receptacle, and using the "Traverse" button activates the map.

Activating the map node opens six portals to the map area. These portals are shared among the party and each portal can only be used once. Once a portal is used, it disappears, reducing the total number of remaining portals.

Each uncompleted node within range has four item slots, while completed Towers have a single slot for a precursor tablet. Activating a precursor tablet will not open map portals.

Death

In solo play, if the player dies in the map area, any remaining portals are lost. In party play, any party member who dies cannot re-enter the map, even if portals remain.

Failed maps can be reattempted by placing another waystone into the receptacle, which creates six new portals.
