Ascendancy Classes, or simply Ascendancies, are subclasses that allow characters to specialize in a specific archetype based on the character's class. Ascendancies can be unlocked by completing Ascension Trials.
Overview
Choosing an Ascendancy Class after completing an Ascension Trial for the first time allows the player to access a new Ascendancy Skill Tree specific to the class chosen. Currently, there are 17 Ascendancy classes available. The full release will have three Ascendancy Classes for each class, for a total of 36.
Each time the player completes an Ascension Trial condition, the player can receive two additional Ascendancy Skill Points, up to a total of 8 points. These points can be obtained in any Ascension Trial, as long as they meet the requirement. It is possible to repeat the same trial for all 8 points. It is also possible to earn multiple sets of points in a single run as long as each condition is satisfied.

To change your ascendancy class, you must complete an Ascension Trial of at least the highest difficulty you've already completed (Ex. if you have 4 Ascendancy points, you need to complete a Trial of Sekhemas with 2 floors or a Trial of Chaos with 7 trials), then use the Altar of Ascendancy with all your Ascendancy passives unallocated. Passives can be unallocated during the trial by speaking with Balbala, the Advisor or The Trialmaster.
Ascendancy Skill Tree
The Ascendancy Skill Tree is a smaller skill tree that a character has access to when an Ascension Trial has been completed. Each Ascendancy Class has its own unique tree. It functions similarly to the larger Passive Skill Tree; the player earns Ascendancy Skill Points, which can be spent on allocating nodes granting passive bonuses. The Ascendancy Skill Tree is shown at the center of the Passive Skill Tree.
Alternate ascendancy classes
Certain alternate versions of existing ascendancy classes can be unlocked through various encounters. The method of unlocking them depends on the specific ascendancy; however, they require the character to already have ascended to the corresponding regular ascendancy in order to do so. For example, the Lich has an alternate ascendancy called Abyssal Lich, which is unlocked through the Abyss encounter.
