Damage over time refers to damage which happens gradually over a duration instead of all at once.
Damage over time does not count as a hit, so bonuses and defences that affect hit damage will not affect it. Resistance in the appropriate damage type will mitigate damage over time but armour and penetration will not as they only apply to hits.
